All too often, we look for something or someone to fix our circumstances, our relationships, our lives.

During this challenging time of living through the covid 19 pandemic I believe we all have to look first within ourselves to assess our own inner strengths, abilities and resiliency. It’s easy to feel powerless during a time when there’s so much happening that is beyond our control.

Everyone who knows me, knows that one of my favorite questions is always What is Your Desired Outcome?  Remember that a desired outcome has to be What you Want, NOT what you don’t want, and it has to be something over which you yourself have control…

I was clearing out desk drawers the other day and came across a gift I received years ago. I was given a gift of a key attached to a heart. It was a gift that made me think about what significance would a key with a heart hold for me… and what significance might it hold for you, as we all explore what meaning this time in our lives can bring to us.

Think about what keys are for… Keys represent control, access, openings, and closings, both literally and emotionally… Keys also represent options and possibilities. While a key has many symbols, the reality is, keys must be used, or they are useless.

So, here we are, for the most part, staying home, practicing social distance, avoiding public places and even avoiding connecting with people in general. In other words, using keys to lock away so many of our vital needs…

Here’s my message as we all work to thrive, not just survive this global and yes, personal pandemic.

Imagine a key is for your heart… It’s simple… What do you want to open up to, what do you want to see open up for you? This is not just a mental exercise; it is about what we can put into practice.

I’ve spoken about taking steps… one step at a time. Martin Luther King said that you don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step. Think about what you could use your key to open for you? Do you want to give and receive more love… what 1 step could you take to bring that into your life? Do you want to explore new possibilities in your life, even with the effects of this pandemic What one step could you take today to begin? Do you purposefully want to set healthier boundaries with others What one step could you take today to make that happen? It’s all about 1 step…

I’ve shared the link to my Step by Step Guide, and I’ll continue to offer it as it helps you through each step along the way to achieve your desired outcome… Take Back Your Life Guide dot com

So, we gather here virtually each week making connections, you can post in our group Take Back Your Life: A Self-Care Group for Overwhelmed Caregivers.

Think about what step you are willing to take to use the keys in your life to make your life the best it can be regardless of current circumstances. Wishing things could, would or should be better IF ONLY, doesn’t work. Stay focused on your Desired Outcome and what 1 step you can take to move you in the direction you want to go… Feeling stuck or unsure, take that slow deep breath, and focus on your desired outcome If you feel confused or overwhelmed, simply breathe. Allow your system to get quiet. Maybe you’ll come up with a simple thing like a moment of peace What one step can you take (or did you just take) to feel that moment of peace? Start with just one step… And we breathe…
